Now the country depends on foreign governments and private companies
South Africa will create its own national shipping company, this is stated on the website of the country’s Ministry of Transport. “Since Maersk acquired the South African shipping line Safmarine, South Africa has been left without a national carrier.
The delivery of our main import and export goods is mainly dependent on foreign governments and companies, and this may not be able to protect the country from disruptions in the supply chain, especially during natural disasters or international conflicts,” the ministry said. Transport of South Africa noted that now it is the only country that is part of the BRICS and does not have its own ships. The agency has already drafted a law on the shipping company and is currently consulting on its implementation. The shipping company is expected to own and operate its own fleet, as well as interact with local logistics services.
